Coughing is a protective reflex causing instant forming of dense air along the bronchis, trachea and larynx. Coughing allows for the removal of irritants, infected material or material blocking the bronchis from the respiratory tract. It is a symptom of most infectious diseases and other disorders of the respiratory system. There may be little sputum or, as it is in bronchial dilatation, profuse sputum and may contain blood.
Coughs are treated with products that are expectorant, stimulate mucus secretion, enhance ciliary motion in the trachea and larynx, and relieve difficulties expectorating.
